Internships

At R.W. Murray Co., we believe a construction internship should be more than a résumé booster—it’s a hands-on opportunity to explore career paths and build real-world experience before graduation.

Our interns spend the summer working alongside a dedicated team, developing practical skills, gaining industry knowledge, and discovering which area of construction best fits their interests. Unlike larger firms, we offer a personalized experience with one-on-one interaction across all departments, ensuring interns receive meaningful mentorship—not just credit toward a degree.

Many of our internships have led to full-time roles, providing a smooth transition into the workforce with the confidence of already knowing our culture, people, and expectations. It’s a win-win—for the intern and for our team.

Superintendents

Superintendents play a vital role in the success of every project. We rely on their leadership and experience to ensure seamless jobsite operations and clear communication across all teams.

They oversee daily construction activities, manage subcontractors, coordinate with Client vendors, and work closely with jurisdictional inspectors. Safety is a top priority, and our Superintendents are trusted to uphold the highest standards while delivering high-quality projects on schedule.

At a company the size of R.W. Murray Co., Superintendents enjoy the opportunity to work on a wide variety of project types—keeping their work dynamic, challenging, and fulfilling. This exposure not only sharpens their skills but also helps them grow into well-rounded, adaptable professionals.

Project Manager

Project Managers play a critical role in the success of R.W. Murray Co., overseeing every aspect of a project from start to finish. Their responsibilities include estimating, preparing bid proposals, negotiating with Clients, procuring materials, awarding subcontracts, and defining subcontract scopes. They also manage scheduling, job coordination, cost control, invoicing, quality assurance, punch lists, and project closeout.

Beyond logistics, Project Managers collaborate closely with superintendents, subcontractors, and the Leadership Team to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and clear communication across all teams—both in the field and the office. They keep Clients informed and engaged throughout the process, maintaining alignment at every stage.

At the heart of the role is a deep commitment to customer service. Project Managers embody our “Always Do Right” philosophy, consistently upholding the highest standards of excellence, integrity, and accountability.

Safety

We take great pride in our safety record and are committed to ensuring that everyone who comes to work each day returns home safely. Protecting the well-being of our team, partners, and visitors is a responsibility we take seriously—because safety isn’t just a priority, it’s a core value.

R.W. Murray Co. has been recognized by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for our exceptional safety standards, earning the STEP Safety Award every year since 2001, including our most recent Diamond Level award in 2025—ABC’s highest level of recognition. These honors reflect our unwavering dedication to safety excellence and the health of our entire workforce.

Culture

At R.W. Murray Co., our culture isn’t left to chance—it’s built with intention. We’re deliberate about what we do and why we do it. As a smaller firm, we cultivate a family-like atmosphere where hard work is balanced with meaningful opportunities for connection and fun.

Throughout the year, our team enjoys a variety of events—from crab feasts and family beach weekends to company meetings in international destinations—all designed to bring us together beyond the office or job site. Unlike larger firms where employees can feel like just a number, we prioritize real relationships and ensure every team member feels seen, supported, and valued.

We champion work-life balance and invest deeply in the personal and professional growth of our people. It’s no surprise that so many team members choose to grow their careers with us—and stay.

Why go anywhere else?

“Across the board, the whole team was a pleasure to work with – from the very first meeting. The subs that were chosen all performed professionally and skillfully… The team was a class act and we’d happily do work with R.W. Murray in the future.

Our Community

Students from Virginia Tech’s Myers-Lawson School of Construction recently turned our Cinnabar Road Self Storage project in Christiansburg, VA into a hands-on classroom.

The tour was led by an R.W. Murray Co. Executive and covered a wide range of topics, from the initial market study and conceptual design to budgeting, contract negotiations, and construction execution.

The day wrapped up with a volley of insightful questions from the students and closing remarks from the VT CEM Chair. No doubt—these are future leaders in the field!
