R.W. MURRAY CO. COMPLETES INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION ON FORMER LANDFILL SITE

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA – October 26, 2010 — R.W. Murray Co., a privately held commercial general contracting firm, announced today the completion of  a 117,000 SF sorting and distribution facility for FedEx Ground.  The build-to-suit project is located on a former construction debris landfill in Lorton VA.  To maximize the utilization of the site and to ensure long-term stability, the development required dynamic compaction, the use of over 500 concrete piles, as well as structural building and apron slabs.  Additional considerations unique to this site include flexible utility connections to minimize the potential failure of connections between stationary structures and earth supported utilities.

Remarkably, the RWM team was able to compress the original 9 month building schedule to 8 months after receipt of permits.  This phase of construction took place during one of the harshest winters in local history.  All in all, the building was completed in 12 months.

Additional project team members include SCS Engineers for environmental requirements associated with landfill construction procedures, Engineering Consulting Services (ECS) for geotechnical and testing requirements, Haynes Whaley structural engineers, and Urban Engineering for all civil engineering. “We were pleased to be a part of the team for this challenging build-to-suit project.  By utilizing our extensive tilt-up and site work experience, we were able to collaborate with the other team members to deliver this customized building within the projected schedule while providing the very best client service possible,” said Alex Gutenson, senior project manager at R.W. Murray Co.
